The New Deal's Effect on a White Woman

During the New Deal many things were created to help the common white woman. One was the Aid to Dependent Children program of Social Security. It was designed largely to assist single mothers. The white women also gained respect because of Roosevelt appointing the first female cabinet member, Francis Perkins. Eleanor Roosevelt was very close to Roosevelt and influenced him to make women's rights more important. Many women also got jobs during the New Deal era but many did not take them because they still believed in the tradition woman who was more of a house wife. Even though it greatly increased women's status the new deal did little for womens rights such as suffrage and legal rights.

Andrew Jackson

Some people consider Andrew Jackson as a king and others consider him as the president of the common man. I believe that he is somewhat both.

Andrew Jackson always favored the southern farmers which in his time was the majority of people. He believed in equality of all people and was a very strict constructionalist who would do anything to perserve and protect the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. However, even though he believed in this equality of all people, he was a slave owner. Kind of contradicting if you ask me. Also during his presidency started the Indian Removal act which drove the indians out of their land and further west. Even though it was not so nice to the indians, it greatly benefited the white man. It greatly extended trade and farming. Also, it opened up a lot of space for people to settle.

Although Jackson may have not done everything perfectly during his presidency, I believe that he was a very good president who tried to do the best for the majority of the people in his time.

Jeffersonian Era

The Jeffersonian Era was very consistant with the vision of Jefferson. He believed in higher education, universal elementary education and even education for indians. However, he was not for womens education. Religous skepticism was big at the time and that led Jefferson to become a believer in Deism which was the belief that God created the universe and then left it alone. Medicine and science were booming in this era and Jefferson was definately for it because of his education beliefs. It also led to the decline in midwives which Jefferson was probably happy about because of his opposition for womens education. Another part of the Jeffersonian Era was that land was gained during the Louisiana Purchase by Jefferson defeating Napoleon. So yes, the Jeffersonian Era was consistant with the vision of Jefferson.

American Revolution

The American Revolution was one of the most radical events in history. Britain had always controlled the colonists and now it was time for change. The colonists were tired of being taxed and controlled by Parliament who resided all the way across the sea. Colonists fought for their indepedence during the Revolution and risked everything that they had. Everything that the colonist depended on was somehow linked to Britain (ex. trade and government) and after the war was over, colonists were in a different situation where they had to figure out how to find other ways to get supplies and goods. They eventually set up trade with Asia and France and created their own government despite how effective it was. The colonists experienced all of these changes just to gain their independence from Britain and this is why I believe American Revolution was so radical.

Christopher Columbus

I do not believe that we should celebrate Columbus day for he did not discover the Americas. When Columbus arrived in America, the Native Americans were already there. But, the vikings were said to have been there long before the Native Americans. Either way, it was not Columbus so why should he get all the glory for "discovering" our country when everyone knows he did not. But does this make him a villan? In my opinion, no. Though it could be argued that he was a villan because of stealing the title of "America's founder" from the people who really were. Even though we are sure he did not discover America, Columbus was in fact a great explorer.
